conclusion for ielts writing task 2

Even though the conclusion for ielts writing task 2 is not a very important aspect in the scoring parameters, it is always good to finish the essay with relevant statements. A conclusion can be a conditional sentence or even a complex sentence. This depends on the kind of question you get taking your style of writing into consideration as well.

A conclusion must serve as an outline statement for an essay. It should be able to summarize all the key points the test taker had discussed in his/her body paragraphs. There are no right or wrong ways to draft a conclusion. As long as the candidate has adhered to the band descriptors, there will not be a hiccup in the scoring areas.

Structure to follow while writing a conclusion for ielts writing task 2

A conclusion can be written anyway, but it is essential to follow a certain format to get a good band score. A conclusion can be divided into two parts:

  1. Summary
  2. Outline Statement

The reason why this is being discussed is that the examiners expect certain elements in your essay to give you a good score. This explanation will give you a resolution for the same. Let’s see these two pointers in detail.

  1. Summary

The summary is the first line of the conclusion. It deals with the ending phase of the essay. In a summary, one has to condense or write briefly about what had been discussed in the two main body paragraphs above. This has to be written in 1-2 sentences along with taking a side which is optional.

Generally, students start the summary by writing the following phrases: To conclude, to summarize, in conclusion, and so on. These are very generic and would not help you score high. A possible solution can be to use less common lexical items as mentioned in the band descriptors. This means that you must use advanced phrases/words but not necessarily complicated ones. Using complicated vocabulary in the essay can also work against you in some cases.

You can look at starting your summary with these opening words instead:

Let’s look at an example.

To recapitulate, though the government is providing various schemes, the poor people are not getting benefitted.

This can be followed by a final outline statement.

  1. Outline Statement

The outline statement is the last line in the essay. It can be an opinion or even taking a side of the question and explaining the reason for it. There is no hard and fast rule that an essay must end with an outline statement. If one is not able to achieve the desired word count, an outline statement helps with the same. It also gives a complete proportion to your essay.

The best way to write this is by using an ‘If conditional’. These are conditional sentences. A condition sentence starts with ‘if’. It has two parts: the ‘if clause’ and the ‘main clause’. There are four types of conditional sentences in the English language. They are:

  • Zero conditional
  • First conditional
  • Second conditional and
  • Third conditional

Let’s see some examples for these. The basic structure to frame an if conditional is (If clause, main clause.)

Example of Zero Conditional

If clause-(simple present), main clause-(simple present).

If you don’t pass, you fail.

Example of First Conditional

If clause-(simple present), main clause-(simple future).

If you prepare well, you will get a good score.

Example of Second Conditional

If clause-(simple past), main clause-(would + v1 verb form).

If I met my model, I would ask for a photograph.

Example of Third Conditional

If clause-(past perfect + v3 verb form), main clause-(would have + v3 verb form).

If I had gotten enough money, I would have given it to you.

Now, you may choose one of the four which suits you. This will make for a good ending statement for your essay.

Let us look at some combinations of essay questions with their conclusion only!

Model 1

Obesity is a serious problem in many countries, especially in rich countries. Discuss ways to solve the problem. Provide specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

In conclusion, although obesity is a serious issue in the developed world, it can be curbed with stringent measures in place. If the above steps are taken, the situation will surely improve in the coming years.

Model 2

Some people think that keeping pets is good for children while others think it is dangerous and unhealthy. Discuss both options and give examples.

To recapitulate, the cited evidence provides strong support for the view that children owning pets is a good thing. If more laws are introduced to ban the ownership of illegally acquired exotic pets, this will no doubt surge in popularity in the future.

Model 3

Some people think that a person improves their intellectual skills more when doing group activities. To what extent do you agree? Use specific details and examples to explain your view.

In conclusion, this essay strongly agrees with the notion that group activities improve intellectual abilities. If schools take greater measures in the future regarding this issue, it will ensure that more group-level cognition occurs in the classroom.
